Wispr Flow is a strong cross-platform dictation product, so the useful question is not whether another app is universally better. It is whether you need something Flow is not centred on: Mac-specific wake-word and always-on activation, fully local model options, or simply the built-in tool you already have. This guide narrows the choice without pretending one product wins every use case.
Clavio publishes this page and therefore has a commercial interest in the comparison. The table uses only defined features and published plan terms; it does not claim that Clavio is more accurate or faster.
Verification: review the dated official sources and checking method. Prices are vendor-published terms in the stated currency and billing period; check the final tax-inclusive total at checkout for your location. Go to the sources →

A practical shortlist for people considering a Wispr Flow alternative
| Option | Relevant when | Activation on Mac | Processing and privacy | Published entry point |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Clavio | A Mac-first workflow with per-app profiles and voice-first activation. | Hold key, trackpad gesture, wake phrase, or always-on mode with an on-device voice profile. | Dictation audio is sent securely for transient cloud transcription; the personal voice profile and wake-word recognition stay on the Mac. | Free: 3,000 words/month. The pricing page displays $15/month and says billing is £12 GBP, with the exact total shown at checkout. |
| Wispr Flow | One dictation product across desktop and mobile, plus meeting features. | Hold the shortcut or double-press for hands-free recording, according to Flow's current product documentation. | Cloud service with separate controls for model improvement, dictation cloud storage and local desktop storage. | Free desktop allowance uses weekly soft and hard limits. Pro is listed at $15/user monthly or $12/user monthly when billed annually; local pricing may differ. |
| superwhisper | Power users who want to choose local or cloud speech and language models. | Customisable toggle, push-to-talk, mode-switching and supported mouse shortcuts. | Can be configured fully locally on Mac; cloud models are optional and separately documented. | Free tier. Pro is listed at $8.49/month, $84.99/year or $249.99 lifetime. |
| Apple Dictation | Occasional, literal dictation with no extra app to install. | Microphone key, configured shortcut, or Edit → Start Dictation. | Apple tells users to check Keyboard settings to see whether their language and use case are processed on-device. | Included with macOS. |
First, name the reason you are switching
A list of fifty features is less useful than one hard requirement. If the friction is holding a shortcut, compare activation. If it is data handling, compare the exact path of audio and text rather than accepting a vague “privacy-first” badge. If it is price, compare the same billing period and the allowance reset period. If it is platform coverage, a Mac-only app and a cross-platform app are not equivalent even when both type at the cursor.
Write down one must-have and two nice-to-haves before installing anything. That keeps a visually impressive onboarding flow from deciding the purchase for you.
- Hands-free Mac use: test wake phrase, always-on behaviour and false activations in your real room.
- Local processing: verify both speech recognition and AI rewriting, because they are separate stages.
- Cross-platform use: check the exact feature on every platform, not only whether an app icon exists.
- Developer workflow: test technical names, prompt review and whether submission remains deliberate.
When Clavio is the relevant alternative
Clavio is designed around a Mac that changes behaviour with the app in front of you. A Cursor or Claude window can use a terse or unpolished profile and wait for review; Mail can use a more formal finish; chat can use a casual finish and an optional post-paste action. The trigger can change too, including a per-app wake phrase or always-on mode.
That is a specific trade-off, not a universal advantage. Clavio requires Apple Silicon and macOS 14.2 or later, and dictation audio is processed through its cloud service. If you use an Intel Mac, need Windows, or require an entirely offline pipeline, another option is a better match.
When superwhisper is the more relevant alternative
superwhisper documents local speech models and local language models on macOS, as well as cloud choices and custom modes. That makes it the clearest candidate in this shortlist when model selection or a fully local configuration is the requirement.
The trade-off is a more configurable model-and-mode workflow. Some people want that control; others want the app to decide less and remember a small set of app-specific behaviours. Test the setup you will actually keep, not the maximum number of options available on day one.
A fair 20-minute test
Use the same microphone, room and five passages in every app. Include a short message, a long email, a paragraph with names, a technical prompt, and a correction made mid-sentence. Record the raw result, the time you spend editing it, and whether it lands in the right field. Do not rely on a vendor's speed multiplier or your first clean demo.
For privacy, repeat the test after opening the relevant data settings and reading what changes. For prices, capture the checkout amount shown in your country before subscribing. That evidence is more useful than a generic ranking.
In the OAuth callback, keep PKCE validation server-side, preserve the existing refresh-token rotation, and add a regression test for an expired verifier.
Test the Mac-first option with your own words
Clavio is free to download on Apple-Silicon Macs running macOS 14.2 or later. The free tier includes 3,000 words per month. Keep it only if the hands-free and per-app workflow earns its place.

Questions people ask before switching
Is Clavio a cheaper Wispr Flow alternative?
The published prices use different currencies and billing choices, so a blanket “cheaper” claim would be misleading. On 4 September 2026, Clavio's page displayed $15/month and said it would be billed as £12 GBP, with the exact total at checkout. Wispr Flow listed $15/user monthly or $12/user monthly when billed annually, with local pricing potentially different. Compare final tax-inclusive checkout totals for the same billing period.
Which alternative works fully offline?
superwhisper documents a fully local Mac configuration using local speech and local language models. Clavio sends dictation audio to its backend for transcription and optional polishing. Apple Dictation may process general dictation on-device depending on language and settings; Apple says to verify the message shown in Keyboard settings.
Which option is best for hands-free dictation on a Mac?
Clavio is the option in this shortlist built around a wake phrase and always-on mode with an on-device voice profile. Wispr Flow documents hold-to-talk and double-press hands-free recording; superwhisper documents toggle, push-to-talk and mouse shortcuts. Test the activation you intend to use in a real room before deciding.
Can I move my Wispr Flow dictionary to another app?
Do not assume an automatic migration. Export or copy only terms you have the right to use, then check the destination app's current import options. Keep the old app installed until the new dictionary has passed a real technical-vocabulary test.
