Claude Code already has voice dictation. A system-wide app solves a different problem

Use the built-in tool when speech begins and ends in Claude Code; use Mac-wide dictation when the whole development loop is spoken.

Current Claude Code includes `/voice` with hold-to-record and tap-to-record modes for eligible Claude.ai accounts. It is a credible default, not a feature to pretend does not exist. A system-wide app such as Clavio earns its place only when you want the same voice workflow in Claude Code, your editor, git client, pull requests, docs and chat — or when you want a Mac-specific wake phrase and per-app rules.

Claude and Claude Code are not affiliated with Clavio. Built-in Claude Code voice is described first and on its own merits. The comparison is limited to publicly documented workflow and data-path differences.

Use built-in /voice when Claude Code is the whole job

Run /voice in a current Claude Code release and choose hold or tap mode. Anthropic's current documentation requires a Claude.ai account and notes that organisation policy can disable voice. The service is not available when Claude Code authenticates directly with an API key or through Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud's Agent Platform or Microsoft Foundry.

Built-in voice also receives coding-vocabulary hints from the current project name and git branch. If that covers your workflow, adding another app creates no automatic benefit.

Use system-wide dictation when the work leaves the terminal

A Claude Code task usually produces more writing: the commit, pull request, issue update, release note and message to a reviewer. A system-wide dictation app applies the same capture method across those surfaces, while letting the output style change by app.

With Clavio, a Claude Code or Terminal profile can stay terse and technical, while Mail and chat use different finishes. A wake phrase can start capture without holding Space. Those are workflow differences, not evidence that its transcript is more accurate than Claude Code's native voice.

Give spoken prompts a stop condition

Voice makes it easy to add context and equally easy to keep talking past the decision. End with a boundary: “stop after the plan,” “do not edit migrations,” or “ask before adding a dependency.” Then review that negation and boundary in the transcript before sending.

Use shorter dictations for course corrections. One long monologue that mixes investigation, implementation and deployment is harder for both you and the agent to verify.

Investigate why refresh tokens are being reused after logout. Read the auth route and tests first. Do not change the database schema or deploy anything. Return a cause and a patch plan, then stop.

Know which service receives the audio

Claude Code /voice streams audio to Anthropic for transcription. Clavio sends dictation audio to its own backend and listed AI subprocessors. Apple Dictation's processing location varies and is described in macOS settings. None of these routes should receive secrets, credentials or confidential material unless your policy and contracts explicitly permit it.

If you need a fully local pipeline, this three-option workflow is not the right shortlist; evaluate a Mac app with documented local speech and language models instead.

Use Clavio only if the workflow extends beyond Claude Code

If built-in `/voice` covers the job, keep the simpler setup. If you want one voice keyboard across the whole Mac and app-specific rules, Clavio's free tier lets you test that difference without a card.

Voice typing with Claude Code

Does Claude Code have built-in voice input?

Yes. Current Claude Code documents /voice with hold and tap modes. It requires Claude.ai authentication, can be disabled by organisation policy, and is not available for direct API-key, Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud's Agent Platform or Microsoft Foundry authentication.

Why use Clavio with Claude Code then?

For system-wide reach and a different activation model. The same voice can write the Claude Code prompt, commit, pull request, docs and chat; a per-app profile can change the style and submission behaviour, and a wake phrase can replace the held key.

Does either route process audio locally?

Claude Code says /voice streams audio to Anthropic. Clavio sends dictation audio through its backend for transcription and optional polishing, while keeping wake recognition and the personal voice profile local. Neither is a fully local dictation pipeline.

Should I enable automatic submission?

Only for clearly low-risk contexts. For code changes, commands, deployment, deletion, credentials, permissions or spending, keep the transcript visible and submit deliberately after review.
